Have you ever had langostino? If not, you are in for a treat! These Langostino Lobster Rolls are similar in taste and texture to the real thing without the price tag.

Langostino Lobster Rolls, shown langostino lobster salad piled on a buttered & toasted potato bun held in a hand.

Do you consider lobster a favorite food? My husband sure does. That man would eat it 3x a week if he could!

Me? I go for shrimp, that is my fav! This ice cold Southern Pickled Shrimp is my summer fav and for dinner? This Spicy Grilled Shrimp is the best! No matter how many pounds I make people want more, lol!

I have been buying 2 pound bags of frozen langostino (for $30 or so) at Costco for the past year+. They are cleaned, cooked and frozen and great for soups, stews, pastas or any langostino recipe you dream up.

Also called Norway Lobster and Squat Lobster, Langostino are great in soups, in pasta dishes, fried, in tacos, in salads, etc. Anything you might use shrimp or lobster for you can use langostino for in a recipe. However langostino are actually a part of the crab family.

    What are Langostino?

    • Often mistaken for shrimp, langostino are small crustaceans, resembling a small lobster, neither belonging to the same family as shrimp or lobster. Langistino are actually part of the crab family.
    • Langostino, also called Squat Lobster, are great in soups, in pasta dishes, fried, in tacos, in salads, etc. Anything you might use shrimp or lobster for you can use langostino for in a recipe.
    • The taste and texture is in between shrimp and lobster in my opinion. They have a sweet buttery flavor.

    Ingredients

    • Hot Dog Buns (I like using potato rolls for this)
    • Butter
    • Langostino
    • Celery
    • Fresh dill & chives
    • Fresh lemon
    • S&P
    • Optional: onions, parsley, cayenne or hot sauce

    Variations

    • Swap langostino for lobster, shrimp crab or imitation crab.
    • Add in onions or not.
    • Enjoy as a salad vs a sandwich.
    • spice it up with a little cayenne pepper.

    Tips

    • Unless you caught these small crustaceans yourself, or live in an area where they are caught fresh, you'll need to defrost them. The langostino will hold some water from being frozen. So, for best results, thaw in a colander/strainer over a bowl or pot and the before using the langostino, press with paper towels to extract extra liquid.
    • If any large pieces are observed, chop them in half or thirds.
    • When cooking with langostino, remember they have already been cooked. So if making soup, stew, pasta dishes etc. Add them towards the end of the cooking process or make it a quick cook.
    • Just like with any seafood dish, they are best enjoyed the day you make them.

What kind of rolls should I use?

    • Regular hot dog rolls, potato hot dog rolls (our fav), split buns. It all works.
    • The key is to butter your buns and then put them on a griddle to crisp a bit. Or you can lightly toast them or grill them. Delish!

    Ingredients

    • 4 potato hot dog buns or regular hot dog or split bun
    • 2 TBS butter
    • ¾ pound langostino
    • ⅓ cup chopped celery
    • 2 TBS chopped onion optional or you can use scallions or chives if you like
    • squeeze fresh lemon juice
    • 1 TBS chopped dill
    • ½ cup mayonnaise
    • S&P
    • 2 shakes Tabasco or for a little heat a couple of shakes of cayenne

    Instructions

    • Thaw your langostino (if necessary). Using paper towels, PRESS the langostino to extract most of the liquid.
    • In a bowl, combine langostino, celery, onion or chives if using, dill, lemon, salt, pepper, Tabasco and if using cayenne. Toss well. Add half the mayo and toss again. Decide if you want more mayo or not and add the rest if you do.
    • Butter the buns and place them face down on a hot pan to brown them.
    • Mound salad onto each roll and enjoy!

    Notes

If you don't like onions, don't add them. Up to you. Personally I like to add chives or scallions. Or just omit.
Start with a small amount of mayo, toss and then add additional from there until it looks they way you enjoy.
If you like a little heat, add in some cayenne pepper.
And of course you can swap langostino for lobster or shrimp.
Make this they way you will enjoy.
