One of the most requested appetizers I serve or bring to gatherings is this, it’s the BEST Hot Onion Dip recipe around, seriously! Everyone always asks for this recipe! There is never any left!

Hot Onion DIp Recipe shown baked in white dish with a pretzle scooping up the hot cheesy dip.

I have been making this hot onion dip for years and years!  I can't decide if the best part about this amazing onion dip recipe is the incredible flavor and soufflé-like texture OR the fact that all you need are 5 ingredients to make it!

This really is an easy appetizer recipe! However, everyone will think you put in some effort, lol!

This hot dip recipe is one of the top 5 of most requested recipes from family and friends. Trust me when I say, to bring copies of the recipe with you or a screenshot, people will be asking for it!

You (or someone new to this dip) will not be able to stop eating it, it happens everywhere I bring it, haha! One taste and your family and friends will start making this 5 Ingredient Hot Onion Dip again and again.

This is probably the most commonly made appetizer recipe by the people in my circle of life! The 5 ingredients are common pantry items , so usually you have the ingredients to make it on-hand. So, when you get quick notice of a party or someone pops by…Boom! You can easily whip this onion dip appetizer up!

This super easy recipe for the Best Hot Onion Dip will become your go-to quick appetizer recipe!

    Dip Ingredients

    • Vidalia onions
    • Cream cheese
    • Mayonaise
    • Parmesan cheese
    • Black pepper
    Hot Onion Dip Recipe

    Pro Tips

    • Room temperature cream cheese works best, if you are in a rush, remove it from its packaging, place on a plate and microwave for 30 seconds or so to soften.
    • A fresh Parmesan cheese wedge is best for this recipe or you can use the shredded Parm in the deli section in plastic round containers.
    • Hellman's or a traditional mayo works best, not the sweeter Miracle whip.
    • Do not use low fat products for this recipe, use full fat.
    • Do not make your oven temp higher than 350, you will run the risk of the cheese breaking and becoming oily.
    • Leave this onion soufflé dip in the oven until the top browns (if you want it that way), vs using the broiler for the same reason. You don't want the cheese to break.

    Low carb appetizer recipe

THIS! This Hot Onion Dip made with just 5 ingredients to make (really just 4 but I am counting the black pepper). You can have it mixed and in the oven in literally 5 minutes flat. About 5 carbs for a 4 ounce serving (picture half of a cream cheese brick). Serve with low carb veggies or crackers.

    Onion Dip Variations

    • Add in jumbo lump crab.
    • A couple TBS of minced jalapeno's can be added for a nice kick.
    • You can add-in frozen, thawed spinach that has been squeezed dry or chopped artichokes that have been blotted dry.
    • Swap the cheese for Colby Jack or Pepper Jack or do half Parm and half one of those.
The BEST Hot Onion Dip recipe

    Instructions

    • This is literally one of the easiest part appetizers or snacks you will ever make!
    • Just dump 1 cup of mayonnaise, 1 cup of Parmesan cheese, 1 (one) 8-ounce package of cream cheese (softened), 1 chopped medium onion (about 1 ¼ cups) and a good amount of black pepper into a bowl and mix until combined.
    • Scrape the mixture into a small casserole dish and bake for 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees. YUM!
    • Serve with raw veggies, French bread, crackers or my favorite way with flat pretzels like Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps, YUM!

I hope you LOVE this super simple yet seriously delicious onion dip as much as my family and friends do! I first shared it in 2012 on the blog and have been making it years before that. I found it from White on Rice Couple many years ago.

    XO Colleen

    Ingredients

    • 1 8 oz package of cream cheese softened (as a gal from Philly, I adore the one and only Philly Cream Cheese)
    • 1 cup mayo
    • 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
    • 1 medium Vidalia onion diced (about a heaping cup full)
    • 1 teaspoon pepper
    • Serve with pretzels slices of crusty bread, or crackers

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all the above in a bowl and mix until smooth.
    • Scrape into a baking dish. Bake for about 30 minutes (give or take) or until the top browns in spots.
    • Note: Don’t cook at higher than 375 degrees or you run the risk of separating your cheese which will make the dip greasy. For best results, don’t use low-fat anything. When making this Hot Onion Dip, you’ve got to live it up!

    Notes

You can make this mixture a couple hours ahead of time, cover and chill until ready to bake.
Don't be shy with the black pepper.
For best results - Do not use low-fat or fat free cheeses or mayo for this.

I didn't cook it at a temperature higher than 375° but mine turned into a greasy mess. I also didn't use low fat ingredients. Not sure what I did wrong.

Philadelphia cream cheese didn’t come from Philadelphia. It was invented in NY.

Love this dip, thanks for sharing. I sliced my onion (had to use a sweet onion) and then sautéed it in olive oil and garlic until lightly browned. I let it cool before I added to the rest of the dip mixture. After baking, I did a few minutes on broil, too. This dip is definitely going into the rotation! (I also enjoy a Mike’s Hard Lemonade :)).

Can this be made a head of time & refrigerated? Two days? Then put in a baking dish and baked?
I've made it and everyone loves it, but I'm time crunched on the actual day an trying to make things ahead of time.

Hi Patty, I am going to go with no. I have never done that however I just know it would not have the souffle-like texture it does when fresh.

Yes!!! Ramps are a gift from the gods for sure! I search every year and have never found them wild. BUT I did plant a handful of bulbs from my haul in 2019 from a forager at a local pop up farmers market and THEY CAME UP this spring!! Hoping they will one day germinate! and I will have more and more, fingers crossed! This dip truly is simple yet spectacular. As long as you don't use low fat anything (IMO) and don't heat it too high and break the cheese. It's amazing! Enjoy!

I have never done that Kim, Would that enable the top to brown a bit? As long as the cheese doesn't get too hot and "break" If so try it. I have never cooked in a crock pot, I have only used a small one to keep warm dips warm.

I have not and honestly only have used a small one to keep things warm in the past. The oven gives it a bit of browning on top which is delish. You can certainly try, just be sure its not too hot and the cheese breaks.

Great to hear! I have not frozen it. I would worry about too much moisture from the ice crystals that would form. However I am not a freezer of many prepared foods, so worth a try.

SO good! Made this for 4th of July and it was a hit. We think we like it better than the standard caramelized onion dip and it was so much quicker to make. Used 1/2 of a large purple onion and it was excellent!! Definitely on the favorite list! 😋
