Cooking with kids
- A passionate home cook is watching my kids blossom in the kitchen is priceless. My daughter, Samantha, turned 10 recently and I was reflecting on who I was at that age. I was making cookies and cakes from a box. I was always put in charge of mashing the potatoes and making the Russian salad dressing for my dad's salad. But that was about it in the cooking department.
- I love that I have empowered my kids to think for themselves in the kitchen and come up with ideas on what it is they want to eat...and therefore make. From simple chicken noodle soup to a stretch like Apple Fritters or Stuffed Chicken Breasts, I enjoy letting them try their ideas out as well as assisting me in whatever I am making..
- My daughter took over the vegetable and chicken stock making responsibility when she was 8. I will never forget the day at the age of 7 she said to me while shopping one day, "hey mom can I buy one of those chickens to make stock?" I was like "Ummm, sure sweetie." Next she decided to teach her friends and cousins how to make it. Truth!!
- Getting your kids at any age in the kitchen teaches them not just the basics of a life skill, it teaches math, science, planning and follow through. It empowers them. AND not for nothing, BUT they will at least TRY whatever they make if not eat every bit.
My daughter likes her soups meatless or with small chicken meatballs. Let your kids decide how they want to make it.
Tips
- If your child needs extra nutritiens and or protien. Scramble an egg and after the soup is just off the heat, stir it slowly into the soup. This is a trick friends from Italy use in soups.
- The egg yolk contains high amount of vitamin A, D, E, K, B1, B2, B5, B6, B9, and B12. The egg white has high amounts of vitamins B2, B3, and B5 as well as significant amounts of vitamins B1, B6, B8, B9, and B12 (Table 2).
- Adding in some chicken bouillon adds extra flavor.
Variations
- This particular soup recipe is super basic for kids. SO many are picky eaters, this however most will eat. If you kids are more adventurous, feel free to add in additional ingredients like celery, onions, herbs, shredded chicken (as shown below).

Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe For Kids
Every kid should know how to make a simple Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe. Let them customize their soup and then gobble it up! Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe For Kids
Ingredients
- 5 cups chicken stock yours or store-bought
- 1 cup sliced carrots
- 1 cup small noodles like ditalini, elbow macaroni, ABC's or small egg noodles
- 1 TBS minced parsley or dried herbs
- 1-2 TBS Chicken Bouillon powder or more/less gives more flavor
- S&P to taste (optional)
Instructions
- Pour chicken stock/broth in a pot, add in your carrots and bring it to a boil (if adding in chopped celery or onions do so now as well).
- Add your noodles once the stock is boiling and carrots have softened. Cook noodles/pasta according to package instructions.
- Remove from heat and stir in parsley/seasoning and bullion. Taste and adjust and add S&P if you choose.
- This is where you would whisk a egg and slowly stir into the soup if you choose to add it.
- Taste it and add in anything you think it needs and enjoy!
Notes
Notes: You can add leftover shredded chicken in, just add the cooked shredded chicken at the end just as you take it off of the heat so the chicken does not dry out.
If you like cooked celery, you can ½ cup of sliced celery into the pot when you add the carrots, you could also add onions in then too if you enjoy them onions too if you want. If you like rice in your soup, check out my recipe for Chicken Rice Soup
From Samantha- "Mom always says to taste and adjust, taste and adjust. She teaches me that I can always change the way food I make tastes to make it taste how I want, so you can too." Hope you love this!
Noodles will continue to soak up the broth. So if serving the following day, you may wish to top off with additional chicken broth if necessary.
