What is Avocado Crema?
Avocado Cream or avocado cream is a condiment often used alongside Mexican cuisine. Think of it as a flavored sour cream. Anything you would use sour cream for you can pretty much use this with. It's fresh & delicious!
Avocado Crema is a light, fresh & tasty condiment, that is quick and easy to make that goes well with a variety of foods.
Uses
- Top steak (like shown below), use on in burritos, fish tacos, or any type of taco as a topping or condiment.
- Serve alongside any grilled meat or fish.
- Delicious as a topping on a burrito bowl, salmon bowl, grilled chicken bowl or fajita bowl.
- Enjoy this as a straight up avocado dip with tortilla chips, pita chips, vegetables, etc. Its one of my favorite dips when served cold and spiced up with cayenne pepper.
- This is a great addition to breakfast toast topped with an egg, think of it as a lighter, fluffier avocado toast.
Ingredients
- Avocados
- Greek yogurt & sour cream
- Fresh garlic, fresh cilantro, fresh jalapeno
- Fresh lime
- Kosher salt and pepper, cayenne pepper for added heat & cumin
Tips
- Use ripe avocados for the creamiest eating experience.
- Look for the nub of the avocado stem, if it comes off easily its a sign the avocado is ripe.
- The skin should be dark green and when pressed it should have some give.
- To help ripen a hard avocado, leave it in a warm sunny spot for a couple of days.
- If your avocados are ripe or just about rip, you can always place them in the refrigerator to halt the ripening process for a day or two.
- I have always liked adding some Greek yogurt to this for extra protein, however you can also make this with just sour cream. I do recommend full fat sour cream.
- I like mine on the thicker side, however feel free to thin it out a bit with additional fresh lime juice or water.
This is also wonderful on its own as a dip with tortilla chips! Always a hit when I serve it.
Storage
- This Avocado Crema will keep in the fridge if stored properly for a few days.
- Store in a bowl, covered with plastic wrap pressed against the crema. The less air that gets to it the less likley it is to discolor.
- Some chefs and home cooks store this (making it thinner with a bit of water), in a squeeze bottle. Making is easy to use to garnish a plate of finished food or tacos.
- Store in a mason jar that is the same size as the amount of avocado cream (less air).
- If any spot is discolored when you pull it out to use, simple scrape it off an enjoy the rest.
